Sovvenzione dalla Fondazione Rothschild

The Centro Veneziano di Studi Ebraici Internazionali (The Venice Center for International Studies) gratefully acknowledges the recognition and support of The Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe, which has awarded to us a grant over 22 months starting in the fall of 2012 for our project, “The Ghetto of Venice and its Legacy”.

The Rothschild family has a long and well-known tradition of philanthropy going back to the eighteenth century. The Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe was established by Lord Rothschild in 2000.  It continues the Rothschild  philanthropic tradition supporting a range of educational, cultural, heritage, and community?based initiatives in over 40 European countries, currently focusing on academic Jewish studies and Jewish heritage.

The Jewish ghetto in Venice was created almost 500 years ago for the purpose of segregating and economically exploiting the Jews of Venice. The economic and social conditions that led to its founding as a place to sequester the Jews also kept it partially connected to the surrounding non-Jewish communities as well as other Jewish communities throughout Europe and the East.  The unexpected result was the flowering of a deep and vibrant Jewish culture in Venice, which has been called a laboratory for the invention of modern Jewish life.

Our project, “The Ghetto of Venice and its Legacy”, focuses on discovering, exploring, and preserving key aspects of Venetian Jewish heritage, and, through a meaningful interaction between the local Jewish community and international visitors, will also participate in the renewal and reinvigoration of Jewish life and culture in Venice.

With the help of the Rothschild Foundation grant, we will focus on specific themes -- Jewish books, Jewish music, Jewish childhoods, etc. -- over a three-year period (2012-2014). The project will comprise annual lecture series and conferences, gathering together international scholars and artists, and bringing them together with members of the Venetian Jewish community and international visitors to Venice. Working with other Venetian institutions, these activities will encourage and assist the local community to reclaim its incomparable heritage, and to share it with an international audience.

A Ghetto anthology is planned along with videotaped podcasts and online publication of the lectures and conferences. Our long?term goal is to establish a permanent, self?supporting program of residential courses designed for various audiences and to create and disseminate internet websites, publications, films, recordings, and other programs and artifacts aimed at the renewal and global dissemination of the Jewish Venetian heritage.
